Threat to East Barnet Village

East Barnet ward is a suburban area with scattered parades of shops, but the two main shopping areas are East Barnet Village and the stretch of shops along East Barnet Road by Sainsbury's.  There is a widespread local desire to retain the traditional character of our shopping ‘villages' with independently-owned local shops.  Nevertheless, there appears to be continuing desire by Barnet Council to promote large superstore developments in New Barnet. Research suggests that any development on this scale will have a disastrous effect on retail activity in East Barnet and also High Barnet.
